The Marriage of Two Chicago Businesses Results in a Happy Ending for All

Tough times might bring an end to some businesses but for others, it inspires them to work smarter and more creatively. Such is the case for entrepreneurs Kirstin Martin, owner of Smitten Boutique, and Kara Underwood, owner of Magnificent Milestones. Kirstin and Kara both had retail storefronts just blocks from each other in the growing West Loop District of Chicago. While there was some overlap in their offerings, their business models proved to be very complimentary.
Magnificent Milestones’ Event Studio, opened in 2007, offering event planning services and carrying an extensive selection of custom invitations. Smitten Boutique, opened in 2008, also offering event planning services and a retail store focused on wedding details, accessories and gifts for all occasions.
In late 2008, while brainstorming ways to weather the economic storm, Kirstin approached Kara and suggested a physical merger. The benefits of the combination seemed to multiply as the two innovative women chatted over coffee at Starbucks. By the time the meeting ended, an agreement had been reached and within a month, Kara was preparing to move.
Rather than existing as competitors, Magnificent Milestones and Smitten combined to make two great companies into one amazing powerhouse in the bridal and event industry. Going forward, Magnificent Milestones will focus on the sale of custom invitations while Smitten will focus on the retail boutique. Kirstin and Kara will both offer event planning services under the Magnificent Milestones moniker, giving brides and grooms the benefit of two seasoned planners under one roof.
“Kara is still getting settled at Smitten but it has already been great having her here!” Kirstin said. “I think in the years to come, 1041 West Madison [the home of Magnificent Milestones and Smitten Boutique] will become known as a great place to visit, not only because of the products we offer but because of the vibe that exists. Kara and I both want the space to be a place where people can come and hang out, have a glass of wine and get excited about the good things that are happening in their lives!”
The women are planning to unveil a tented outdoor garden this spring, which will give customers one more reason to want to visit this entertaining pair!
