Before ordering, here are answers to some important frequently asked questions!

Are appointments recommended?

Yes, by scheduling an appointment you get one on one attention from one of our knowledgeable invitation specialists. We typically offer an hour and a half to sit down with one of our associates where they can answer any and all questions. Sip champagne while you browse through samples from one of the many designer lines we carry. To schedule an appointment call us at 312-226-7777 or email us at info@smittenboutique.net

How many invitations should I order?

You will need one invitation per couple, individual, or family you wish to invite. If you are unsure as to the exact number of guest we suggest you round up your order, just in case you would like to add to the guest list. It is significantly less expensive to simply order extra invites the first time around in comparison to placing a second order later.

What is the minimum order for invitations?

It can vary depending on the line you choose, but typically it is 25 or 50.

Can I alter the color, design, or font of the invitations?

Yes, all of these can be changed at no additional cost. Each design in the albums is a sample and can be altered to fit the theme of any wedding.  However, adding colors to an invitation is usually an additional charge.

What are letterpress, thermography, engraving and other printing options, and how do they differ?

Engraving – This is the most formal printing technique. It is essentially a raised type with a matte finish and a bruised back appearance; this is also the most expensive option.

Thermography – This is a cost effective alternative to engraving. It results in a raised type with a shiny finish and no bruising on the reverse side.

Letterpress - This is one of the oldest forms of printing. It is the opposite of engraving, a plate is made with the desired text which is then inked and stamped into the paper. It varies in cost depending mostly on the thickness of the paper.

Offset – This is a wonderful option for those short on time. It is a flat, crisp printing and is also quite affordable.

When should I order my invitations?

You’re welcome to come by Smitten at any time during your engagement to look through our invitation books; however, we do encourage you to look early.  Customarily, most couples seriously peruse the invitations six months before the wedding date, and order five months before. This timeline allows for review of proofs, necessary revisions, any desired calligraphy, as well as stuffing and stamping the envelopes.

How do I determine the date to put on my RSVP card?

In order to determine the RSVP date, most couples select a date that is at least three weeks prior to their wedding date. A majority of caterers, venues, and hotels request a final head count 14 days prior to the event.

How do I indicate that it’s an adult only event?

Perhaps the most common way to indicate an adult reception is to only address the invitation to the individuals you would like to attend. For instance use, “Mr. and Mrs. Gregor Martin” instead of “The Martin Family.” Also, instead of using the word “guest” use “adults” on the RSVP card.

Will I receive a proof before my invitations are printed?

Yes, we will email a PDF proof to you for approval once your order is complete. You can alter and revise the proof until your desired appearance is achieved. Once the proof is approved, your order will be placed and your invitations will go into production.

When should I mail the invitations?

The rule of thumb is to mail wedding invitations between six and eight weeks prior to your event. If you are having a destination wedding or one on a holiday weekend, then you should send the invitations eight to ten weeks before, in order to give your guests ample time to make necessary arrangements.

How much will postage cost?

Once the invitations are assembled and addressed, a single invite should be taken to the post office to be weighed and measured. This ensures that you will have enough postage on each envelope, and don’t forget to get stamps for the RSVP envelopes as well!  It should also be noted that odd shaped envelopes (squares included) typically have higher postage rates than the original rectangle shaped envelope.
